Pick Six: Where to Brunch and Catch the Game
Sundays were made for two things: brunch and football. When it comes to D.C.’s favorite meal, it’s important to choose a restaurant with a view...of many TV screens. With college football, college basketball, NBA, NFL and NHL seasons all in full swing, there is no shortage of sporting events to watch. Don’t drop the ball when it comes to a good meal and finding a spot to cheer your team on, because both are equally important. Here’s our Pick Six for game viewing and good food:
Penn Commons: Whether you’re a Capitals, Wizards or Mystics fan, you can’t get much closer to the action than this bar, just steps away from the Verizon Center. With a large bar and communal tables surrounded by TVs, the latest restaurant from the Passion Food Restaurant Group is an ideal “brunch and watch sports” kind of place. Their extensive menu includes brunch favorites such as eggs benedict and huevos rancheros in addition to a lot of items from their regular menu. City Tap House: Located by Mount Vernon Square, this restaurant has several dining areas with a number of TVs on the walls and around the bar. Known for craft beers and brick oven pizzas, order up one of their six variations including a classic margherita pizza and a honey goat cheese pizza or go the traditional brunch route and try the biscuits and gravy or strawberry almond French toast. Meridian Pint: Head to the basement of this Columbia Heights watering hole for a game experience akin to being in a man cave. The dark space is complete with TVs, arm chairs, quirky wall art and booths with beer taps. Pour a pint and nosh on their brunch burrito or try one of their many burger variations. Bracket Room: If you’re a foodie and a sports fan, this Arlington bar is the place for you. A self-described sports lounge and eatery, enjoy brunch while watching the game on any of their 35 screens. Brunch plates include chicken and waffles, a customizable omelet and a make-your-own breakfast pizza. During brunch, bloody marys, red and white sangria and mimosas are offered at a discounted price of $5.50 a glass. (1210 N. Garfield St., Arlington;703-276-7337)
Roofer’s Union: The second floor dining area of Adams Morgan’s oft buzzed about spot has floor to ceiling windows on one side and HD TVs on the other: a perfect view no matter where you’re sitting. Tuck into the Hot Mess, which is exactly what it sounds like with sausage, peppers and onions, fried chicken, a sunny side up egg and gravy or indulge in the creme brulee bread pudding. The Fainting Goat: Conveniently located just steps away from the U Street metro station, they’ll be showing Big 10 men’s basketball games throughout the season. Stop by for their brunch which has everything from pork belly and grits to corn cakes and chicken hash and wash it all down with one of their three bloody mary variations including one named The Bloody Goat.
