Best Places to Day Drink in NYC
With snow days and ‘sick days’ piling up and friends and family visiting for post-holiday adventures, it might be time to figure out which bars in the city are open early. Who said noon had to be the acceptable hour to start drinking, anyway?
Luckydog
With incredibly chill vibes and a bring-your-own-dog policy, Lucky Dog is open all afternoon, with a happy hour beginning most days at 2 PM that includes $2 beers (cans only, but still a good deal). The shuffleboard and outdoor space will provide you with enough variety to stay there for hours without feeling stagnant. (303 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn)
Skytown
The bartenders will make you feel welcome if you set up shop (and actually continue to buy drinks), as will the long, wooden tables good for big groups and those days when you feel like “working from home” with some friends. The bar also offers some decent food throughout the day to make it possible to keep downing their relatively cheap house cocktails (like the Fleet Street, which is perfect for winter with its whiskey, cloves, cinnamon, honey and ginger in hot water). Ninth Ward
With high-end “apps,” this place might be more of a parent-pleaser if they’re visiting (plus, they can pay for said apps?). The drinks, on the other hand, are on the cheaper side, and though it’s not open until 4 PM, it will provide a comfortable, open space for you to spread out in during a lazy afternoon. The Charleston
This bar gives out free pizza during the day when you buy a drink. It’s very divey, so that’s just a warning for people looking to bring the whole, happy family along for free slices. (174 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn; 718-599-9599)
Professor Thom’s
Originally a Boston bar, Professor Thom’s offers a place to watch various sporting events starting as early as 11 AM. Plenty of bar food, like jalapeno poppers and mozzarella sticks, will help get you through the games. (219 2nd Ave.; 212-260-9480)
Birreria at Eataly
If you want to impress your out-of-town family members by going a little more upscale (or maybe you’re, ya know, on a date or something), take him/her to Eataly, Mario Batali’s all things Italian restaurant. The Birreria will let you and your guests enjoy beer in a number of ways, like in a broth for mussels or as drafts from the rooftop brewery. (200 5th Ave.; 212-937-8910)
