Pay Your Beer Debts with BeerGivr

If you've followed our posts here, our Twitter feed or our Facebook page, you've surely heard of BeerGivr. The brainchild of Baltimore local Sean Kennedy, this is a concept so simple it leaves us wondering how nobody capitalized on this phenomenon previously.  How many times have you missed out on a get-together, or wanted to thank someone for a favor but couldn’t meet up? Instead of offerning an amorphous “hey, I owe you a beer,” with BeerGivr you can turn your words to actions and send an actual beer in your place.

The technology is simple. You log onto the website to pay for the bar tab and it sends out a link to a QR code. Your friend redeems the code with the bartender at one of the participating bars, who can scan the code or enter the Bar ID manually, and the full amount is taken off their pre-tax bill. The site is mobile friendly and cuts right to the chase: "Owe a Beer? Time to pay up."

The newest upgrade to the site is its integration with Twitter. Sean notes that in today’s world of cell phones, many people don't know their friends phone numbers.  Linking your profile to Twitter allows you to send the redemption link directly to your pal’s handle.

All leaders need a first follower to make their idea a reality, and BeerGivr has Bad Decisions owner John Reusing to thank. Kennedy noted, “John has a great reputation for being the first person to be involved in things that are interesting and specifically technology-related.” Since its debut in October 2011, 20 bars have joined the beer giving movement including Alewife, Bond Street Social, and Mother’s Grille. Check out the full listing of participants on the BeerGivr website.

BeerGivr was recently named Best New Startup in Baltimore by Tech Cocktail, and they aren’t stopping there. Expect more expansion and innovation from Sean and his team (Ryan Bricklemyer and Scott Cover) as they work to make beer-giving part of your everyday life. In the meantime, we think it’s about time for you to make good on some of your beer-related debts.
