Gluten-Free Beers and Bars

by Chase Harrison on Aug 3, 2011 in Culture

An increasing number of bars are beginning to carry gluten-free beers due to a raised awareness of those with gluten intolerance (often caused by celiac disease). Certain proteins in barley and wheat make it tough for people with a gluten-intolerance to enjoy beer but a growing number of breweries are working on making it easier for those who must live a gluten-free lifestyle.

Some popular gluten-free beers include: Redbridge, Bard’s Tale Dragon’s Lager, Green’s Gluten Free Beers, New Grist Beer, O’Brien Brown Ale, Pale Ale, and Premium Lager, Sprecher Mbege, and Ramapo Honey Beer.

Here is a list of some places around Philly that offer gluten-free beers:

The Bards: Has hosted gluten-free days and usually has gluten-free items and beers on the menu

Blarney Stone: Often carries Redbridge in bottles

City Tap House: The tap list is constantly changing but it has been known to have a few options for those with an allergy or celiac disease

Dock Street Brewing Company: Periodically brews a gluten-free Sudan Grass Ale

Hawthorne’s: Recently added Sprecher’s Mbege to its already impressive selection

Local 44: Keeps a rotating gluten-free bottle in the rotation

The Institute: Offers gluten-free food as well as hard cider

The Bottle Shop: The South Philly beer store offers a few beers that are gluten-free

The Foodery: This place really has something for everyone and gluten-intolerant people are no exception
