Boozy Events at the Philadelphia Science Festival, April 18-28
From April 18–28, the Philadelphia Science Festival takes place for the third year in a row, bringing a slew of science-y panels, talks, tours and demonstrations to the city. Learning for knowledge’s sake is great and all, but why not combine your schooling with a bit of booze? Here are XX events that involve drinking in one way or another. Science!
PSF Kick-Off Party: Science Carnival After Dark
6:30 PM, Thursday, April 18; $15; tickets
NextFab Studio (2025 Washington Ave.)
Once again, Yards Brewing Company has created a special beer just for the fest. The 2013 signature brew is called Pythagorean Beerum, and it’s a Belgian tripel served in large-format bottles. Be one of the first to taste it and also explore the studio’s laser cutter and 3D printers — you can even make paper “cocktails.”
All Things Fermented: The Science of Beer and Cheese
2:30 PM, Sunday, April 21; $55; tickets
Manayunk Brewing Company (4120 Main St.)
Scientists will explain how both beer and cheese rely on fermentation for their wonderfulness, and while you’re learning about them, you’ll taste them. Enjoy tastes of eight different beers and several cheeses during the informal seminar by the Schuylkill.
5 Senses Crawl
2:30 PM, Sunday, April 21; $35; tickets
Betsey Ross House (239 Arch St.)
Traipse around Old City while exploring each of your five senses with hands-on activities at five different stops. Where’s the drink? Each stop will have refreshments, since drinking involves just about all senses (sight, taste, smell, touch), and perhaps sound, too, if you count the clinking of ice in the glass.
Sweet and Savory: Hives and Honey
6 PM, Monday, April 22; $30; tickets
Continental Old City (138 Market St.)
Join the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild for a night of cocktails as you learn about these tiny creatures that are so crucial to our food ecosystem. Appetizers and drinks will feature honey in many tasty forms, and you’ll even get to see a hive in action.
Hot, Hot, Hot: The Science of Spicy Food
6 PM, Tuesday, April 23; $20; tickets
Han Dynasty (3711 Market St.)
Scientists from the Monell Chemical Senses Center will take on the spicy madness that is Szechuan food. During an informal talk you’ll learn more than you thought there was to know about “heat” — even the molecular structure of the many types of spice (there are four main kinds). Nibble on a few spicy snacks and sip on a glass of beer as you take in the hot info.
Perceptions of Flavor: An Evening With Shola
6 PM, Tuesday, April 23; $40; tickets
Continental Old City (138 Market St.)
With Studiokitchen, Shola Olunloyo is continual pushing the boundaries of flavor forward, and you’ll get to sample and learn about his modernist techniques during a four-course meal that will “dazzle your tastebuds.”
Beer Chemistry: Perfect Pairings
7 PM, Friday, April 26; $55; tickets
Yards Brewing Company (901 N. Delaware Ave.)
How do you know what beer to match with what food? Turns out you can use a bit of science to wow guests at your next dinner party. Join Yards master brewers and Monell scientists and test out theories by sipping on Tavern Spruce while eating Fette Sau pork belly, or Little Baby’s Ice Cream. Research is hard work.
Science for Sinners
6 PM, Sunday, April 28; $5; tickets
Frankford Hall (1210 Frankford Ave.)
Enjoy happy hour pricing on great beer and food throughout this entertaining talk, which covers the science behind the seven deadly sins. There’s a reason for that gluttony, now you can learn about it.
