Tria: 2013 Drinker's Choice Award Winner, Best Wine Program
Tria first popped up in Rittenhouse Square in April of 2004, and this week will celebrate its ninth anniversary. (Join the Tria crew in an all-day celebration on Tuesday, April 30 featuring $9 classes of special Thierry Triolet “grower’s” Champagne.) The wine program from partners Jon Myerow and Michael McCaulley — which started out strong — has only grown better each year as the wine-beer-cheese operation has grown.
When the duo was sure they could handle another location, they scooped up the 12th and Spruce corner space for the second Tria. Formerly a laundromat, they installed wood floors and a bar, set up floor-to-ceiling windows and some of the best outdoor seating in the city (with handy heat lamps for cooler weather), and launched in 2007.
They’ve since expanded to a third spot, Tria Wine Room in West Philly, which features a large outdoor deck. “Having multiple locations is challenging,” Myerow tells us, “but It has allowed us to have a bit more clout when it comes to getting cool products.” That’s evident with all of the unique wine served at each of the three locales, and its why you voted Tria winner of the 2013 Drinker’s Choice Awards for Best Wine Program.
The by-the-glass wine selection changes so often it’s presented on a clipboard for easy refreshing, along with sheets listing beers and cheeses. Varietals hail from all over the world, with many organic and biodynamic wines mixed in among classics. Weekend life in Philly isn’t complete without at least one visit to Sunday School, the Sunday special that sees one unique wine, beer and cheese available for half-price.
Myerow and McCaulley also run a Fermentation School, which offers classes on wine tasting, sourcing and serving. These often sell out weeks in advance, so sign up for the Tria newsletter to get early news of what’s coming. Bonus: the beer side of the program is about to get a boost, since the partners plan to take over the former Rum Bar space in Rittenhouse and open Tria Taproom. Stay tuned for more news on the new venture as we hear it.
