Geek Out: Stone Brewing, Wil Wheaton and Fark.com Collaborate on w00tstout
Stone Brewing has released another of the limited-edition beers the California brewery is well-known for, and this is one to geek out about. Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout is a dark, hoppy beer created by Stone co-founder Greg Koch, geek idol Wil Wheaton and Drew Curtis of Fark.com.
Avid homebrewer Wheaton has been friends with Koch for years, and the two first discussed the idea of a collaboration in spring of 2012. They brought in mutual bud Drew Curtis and came up with this unique imperial stout.
Made with rye, wheat and pecans and then aged in bourbon barrels, this 13% ABV bomb is now available in 36 states on draft and in 22-oz. bottles. It may be the highest alcohol beer Stone has ever brewed, according to brewmaster Mitch Steele, who also writes, “This beer is definitely a sipper.” Look for cocoa and coffee flavors up front, woody notes in the middle, and a hoppy bitter finish (it rings in with 65 IBUs).
It’s a beer well-suited for aging, if you do get your hands on a bottle. There are three different labels to choose from: one has a classic Stone hop vine crest and one shows with a “superhero” rendering of each of the collaborators decked out in capes and masks. The third bottle features artwork by Joel Watson in which each of the trio proffers the key ingredient they contributed: pecans for Curtis, wheat for Wheaton and hops for Koch.
Curtis, Koch and Wheaton introduced the beer at "Hop-Con" in California last week
