Fountain Porter Hosts Benefit for JJL, Mon., March 31
Johnny Brenda’s jack-of-all-trades (and one of the coolest dudes working the Philly music scene) Jay Laughlin and his bandmates in JJL lost everything when fire ravaged their South Philly studio and rehearsal space in late February.
Guitars, including a nearly priceless vintage Les Paul, drums, amps, recording gear and more than 12 years of recordings and personal mementos all went up in flames. While no one was injured in the fire, the loss was nonetheless devastating.
But in true Philly fashion, the community is coming together to help Laughlin and bandmates Brian Wilkinson and Pete Girgenti overcome the heartbreaking and catastrophic loss on Monday, March 31 at South Philly’s Fountain Porter.
Philadelphia Brewing Company, Noord’s Joncarl Lachman and Bob Moysan, and dozens of friends and neighbors are generously pitching in to help out the cause. For a $20 donation, patrons will get two PBC beers and sandwich of their choice. Along with Fountain Porter’s always-awesome $5 burgers, Lachman will be serving his now famous bitterballen herring sandwiches in burger form.
In addition to beers and sandwiches, the evening will have two Chris’s — that’s PBC rep Chris Morris and Jay’s older brother Chris Laughlin — spinning records, and a host of goods and services generously donated for a raffle. They include:
-A gorgeous print from Rob Linsalata, Creative Director of Agency M
- Dear Colleen at Black and Brew has donated a $20 gift card
- Dinner for two at sweethearts Mary Ann and Dan Ferrie’s wonderful BYOB Chloe
-$100 from the ultra-fabulous Lily Cope at COOK
- Murph down at the Dolphin will let 4 of y'all in gratis. Thanks, hon!
- Talented make-up artist Elizabeth Terenchin will make you even more beautiful with a free session
- Dinner for two at the truly amazing Fond
- A wonderful, original piece by landscape architect Mathew Davis
- The incomparable tastemaker Tom Longo Jr at Metro Men’s has donated not one, but TWO $50 gift cards
- A stunning print by Noord’s one-and-only Bob Moysan
- Seamstress Nicole Rae Styer (N.R.S.) sweetens the pot with a one-of-a-kind piece
- South Philly pioneer and stalwart, Paradiso, will host two for dinner
- A certificate for a pleasant poking at South Philadelphia Community Acupuncture
- Gifted chef Sam Jacobson of Southwark is donating his time and talent to whip up a Sunday brunch in your home for up to 6. He’ll bring the food and the magic. I’ll serve you. You buy the booze.
- Cigars from the awesome Anthony at Philly’s oldest cigar shop: Twin Smoke Shoppe
- Oasis of gorgeous greenery amongst the grit, Urban Jungle, has donated $50 to get your spring planting started
- Darling Laura Burkhardt (Where Magazine) is giving gift cards to Ocean Prime and Waterworks
Raffle tickets will cost $5 a piece or $20 for five. 5. An old-school fishbowl drawing will commence at 8 PM sharp. Throughout the rest of the evening proceeds from all PBC beers sold will be donated to the cause. And all the money raised will go to directly to Laughlin and his bandmates.
