Bierstube Presents 'Swartz n Kegger,' a Requiem for Farmers' Cabinet, July 25 and 26
As if you haven’t already heard, always troubled and drama-prone Farmers’ Cabinet has once again gone dark, and this time, with its owners facing a million-dollar lawsuit, it will likely remain closed.
But it’s not going without a proper send-off. Michael Naessens, who owns Eulogy Belgian Tavern and Bierstube in Old City, is working closely with former Farmers’ Cabinet manager Brody Smythe and other staffers to present Swartz n Kegger at his subterranean Underbar beneath Bierstube on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26.
The back-to-back evenings will essentially recreate everything that was ever cool about the much maligned bar and restaurant during its brief heyday prior to all its legal, financial and personnel problems piling up.
Farmers’ Cabinet alum will resuscitate recipes from the shuttered bar’s cocktail list that they will mix, shake and pour while a live jazz combo provides musical accompaniment. Naessens also lined up some hard-to-find kegs of obscure European craft beers and kitchen crew from Farmers’ Cabinet to cook and serve some of the restaurant’s signature menu items.
What’s more, guests who present a copy of the affidavit served to Smythe in lieu of his conveniently unavailable employers back in June, will receive a free drink, provided they make a $3 donation to Community Legal Services, the organization that’s helping Farmers’ Cabinet employees try to recover lost and/or stolen wages.
The fun starts at 6 PM both nights, and it’s all pay as you go.
