Brick and Mortar Brings Cocktails and Creative Bar Fare to the Loft District

Brick and Mortar Brings Cocktails and Creative Bar Fare to the Loft District

With years at the city's most notable cocktail dens, it was pretty much a given that Mike Welsh's new restaurant would be serious about the bar program, but the thought that went into Brick and Mortar goes way beyond the drinks.

Located on the ground floor of the Goldtex Building, Brick and Mortar's sunny dining room pays homage to the building's graffiti-covered history with a few custom-sprayed columns by the main entrance. Past the columns, a wall of banquet seating faces the bar, leading back to a subway tiled wall featuring the restaurant's antelope head logo.

Franklin Mortgage vet Christina Rando is heading up the cocktail program, and she's crafted a menu that's broken down into four sections: shaken, stirred, bottled and shims, lower proof cocktails that are designed for either lightweights or those looking to go the distance. With only three ingredients — Rittenhouse rye, grapefruit juice and raspberry syrup — the Blinker is a standout.

On the draft side of things, Brick and Mortar has 12 beers on tap as well as four wines including a prosecco. The opening draft list is looking great with local faves like St. Benjamin Liaison Saison and Frecon Early Man dry cider.

In the kitchen, Brian Ricci, formerly of Kennet, has put together a meat heavy menu that lends itself to cocktail drinking. Bar bites include a tandoor pork loin skewer and house cut fries with an intriguing Berbere and ginger spiced ketchup. Larger shareable plates come from the rotisserie (think a half or whole chicken roasted with lemon, thyme and rosemary), and there's a short and sweet dessert menu with nice looking options like a sticky toffee muffin with housemade ice cream and a chilled red currant souffle.

Brick and Mortar is open daily from 4 PM–2 AM.
