Guinness Faces off Against Craft Beer on St. Patrick's Day, According to Untappd

Guinness Faces off Against Craft Beer on St. Patrick's Day, According to Untappd

With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, we’re already considering what we’ll be drinking on March 17. If you ask us, green beer is for rookies, but thanks to some recent data crunching from Untappd, we’ve learned that we’re not alone in that sentiment.

Untappd is considered one of the country’s premier domestic and craft beer apps for beer lovers. Users check into the app, recording what beers they’re drinking at what bar. They can also rate the beers they’ve drank, give reviews, and chat back and forth with drinkers and brewers across the country all through one social media site.

Untappd co-found Greg Avola crunched the numbers for Drink Philly to find out what beers Philadelphians were drinking on St. Patrick’s Day in 2015, within the 20 mile radius of the city. Here are the top 10:

1. Guinness Draught by Guinness
2. Hop Hunter IPA by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
3. Pliny the Younger by Russian River Brewing Company
5. Nugget Nectar by Tröegs Independent Brewing
6. Smithwick's by Guinness
7. Blushing Monk by Founders Brewing Co.
8. Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company
9. Grapefruit Sculpin by Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits
10. Harp Premium Lager by Guinness

Guinness, of course, was the star of the show, and Guinness brand beers made up 30 percent of the top check-ins on March 17, 2015. But craft beers still managed to make an impressive showing in the city, especially Russian River, who had to delay the much-loved arrival of Pliny the Younger to Philadelphia last year after some particularly brutal snow storms.

We at The Drink Nation don’t expect Pliny the Elder or Pliny the Younger to be as popular on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day, as most Pliny events have come and gone for 2016, but the other craft beers making an appearance on St. Pat’s are worth noting if you’re looking to mix things up this year. Local breweries aren’t the head of the pack, but Dogfish and Troegs do make an appearance. Hoppy beers, like Hop Hunter IPA and Nugget Nectar, prove that you don’t need to just stick to stouts and porters to enjoy the holiday, while Grapefruit Sculpin’s surprising popularity shows that some people are just ready to skip the day entirely and jump right into summer.

If you’re looking to get started on Untappd, St. Patrick’s Day is the day to do it. According to Avola’s numbers, Untappd sees a major spike in usage on March 17 compared to other dates during that week. On St. Patrick’s Day in 2015, users were logging in at a massive rate of 3,500 check-ins per hour, and that was just for Guinness alone. Avola says that number for Guinness is almost seven times the average rate.
