Whiskey fans rejoice: August is National Rye Month! In order to celebrate the great grained spirit, we’ve rounded up the bars serving up the best selections of rye and rye cocktails in the city. Happy sipping!
Sip a Manhattan made with Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Dolin Rouge, bitters and a brandied cherry at this Center City cigar and whiskey bar. The bar has over 385 whiskeys in their collection, 45 of which are ryes. (1522 Walnut St.)
Though this restaurant is named after a different type of whiskey, this Northern Liberties spot doesn’t disappoint when it comes to its rye selection. Some of their seasonal rye cocktails include the “Goodnight Joey” made with Wild Turkey Rye, Cynar, lemon, Averno Amero and St. Germain, the “Mitch & Gayle” with Wild Turkey Rye, Art in the Age Rhubarb, lemon and jalapeno simple syrup, and the “Capeside Minuteman” with Kinsey Rye, Antica, Campari, Benedictine, and smoke tincture. Head to this Washington Square whiskey bar to try a classic Boulevardier made with George Dickel Rye, sweet vermouth and Campari. They also have a great selection of American ryes as well as an American rye tasting flight. (123 S 7th St.)
This Southern-inspired Old City spot serves up rye cocktails that are both tasty and affordable. Try their Sazerac made with Old Overholt Rye, a rinse of absinthe, and Peychaud’s Bitters for $9 or a Scofflaw made with Old Overholt, dry vermouth, grenadine, and blood orange bitters for $8. Raise a snifter at this Fishtown whiskey bar with a vast selection of ryes, many of which are PA local. Selections include classics like Manhattans and Sazeracs. Pro tip: stop by during their 3 hour happy hour, Monday through Friday 5 PM-8 PM, for a $6 cocktail of the day and a $8 whiskey of the day. (529 E Girard Ave.)
Chef Jose Garces’ saloon and raw bar offers an extensive selection of cocktails, including a signature cocktail the “Back in Time,” which combines Old Overholt, Amaro Meletti, Dolin Génépy Des Alpes, Breckenridge Bitters, orange bitters and chocolate bitters. Other choices include an Old Fashioned made with Rittenhouse Rye and house bitters; the Toronto with Old Overholt and Fernet Branca; the Ward 8 with Rittenhouse, orange, lemon, simple syrup and pomegranate; and the Vieux Carré with Old Overholt, brandy, Dolin Sweet Vermouth, Bénédictine, and bitters. This whiskey bar and live music spot is another great place to go if you like your rye neat or shaken in a cocktail. Try the seasonal cocktail “I Believe I Can Rye,” made with Old Overhold, Chartreuse green, lemon and mint or a classic Manhattan. (1315 Sansom St.)
Look no further than this Society Hill southern restaurant and juke joint for a huge selection of whiskeys. Get your rye fix with their specialty cocktail the “Wild, Sprung and Stung” made with Wild Turkey 101, honey, sage, grapefruit and egg white. (509 S 2nd St.)
Check out this farm-to-table steakhouse on the Parkway for some delicious rye cocktails. The Rittenhouse Square, made with Rittenhouse Rye, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Ramazzotti Amaro, Old Fashioned Bitters and smoke, is a stand out on the menu. (1850 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.)
Village Whiskey
Another one of Garces’ spots is worthy of a visit this month because of their rye flights and cocktails. The bar offers a Pennsylvania rye flight which includes Social Still, Dad’s Hat and Kinsey Ryes. Cocktails to try are the Brooklyn made with rye, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and Amaro Torani and the “South Broad” with rye, Strega, Lillet Rose, raspberry syrup and lemon.
