Snack Bar: A Friendly Favorite
Stroll southwest from Rittenhouse Square and you'll see a warm glow on the corner of 20th Street, where Snackbar has provided an elegant but friendly neighborhood presence since its opening in 2006.
The maroon-clad spot recently removed several tables to make room for a brand new white ash bar, effectively doubling the number of bar seats. Owner Jonathan Makar also encourages people sitting at tables not to rush, but to sip cocktails, beer, and wines while simply enjoying the evening. Guests often move between groups, milling in the aisles and enjoying the hop from seat to seat like an on-going cocktail party.
Long windows swing open on the wall opposite the bar, giving the indoor tables and banquette cool breezes throughout spring and fall. A row of outdoor furniture lines the sidewalk, where courteous servers attend to guests seated with friends and even their dogs.
(The popularity of these tables is such that Makar even set them out during the blizzards last winter. He offered free dinners to anyone brave enough to sit and eat there. Several couples took him up on the deal!)
A selection of five reds, five whites and a few sparkling wines by the glass changes every so often, with prices averaging around $9. Snackbar also offers "Special Occasion Wines" by the bottle, great finds that they stock in limited quantity. Five bottled beers rotate seasonally.
The liquor cabinet is well-outfitted, and the seasoned bartenders know just how to mix your drink, be it a traditional classic or a new idea. A set of suggested cocktails includes the Bloody Murray, named for Makar's grandfather, a tomato juice-vodka drink rimmed with everything bagel spice and garnished with sour pickles.
Makar has successfully led the restaurant and bar through several different chefs, beginning with former Marigold Kitchen colleague Jonathan McDonald (now at Pub & Kitchen). A new menu keeps favorites like their seasonal grilled pizza, which has a domino effect when ordered; as tables see it pass by, they decide to order one for themselves.
A large selection of hors d'oeuvres includes calamari, oysters on the half-shell, bourbon-hickory boneless wings and a good cheese and charcuterie list. There's also a delectable breakfast burger, topped with a fried egg, bacon, cheddar and served with crispy house-cut fries.
It's the hospitality that keeps regulars coming back, and bringing their friends. A bar where your drink of choice is likely to be remembered after just one or two visits. A perfect setting for a glass of wine and people-watching. A casual dining space where the owner will hunt down the steaks of your choice when you swing by for dinner, even if they're not on the menu.
Open daily from 5pm to 2am, Snackbar is a great destination, be it for a pre-dinner cocktail, dinner with your loved one, a nightcap before going home or a full-on night of fun with friends.
