The Pub That's Perched Above Sotto Varalli
Perched above Sotto Varalli on the Avenue of the Arts, this brand spanking new bar is now one of my favorite spots. You might not think that a bar in this neck of the woods would be so inviting, cozy, and reasonably priced, but I was pleasantly surprised! We were greeted by staff clad in plaid, after walking up the winding spiral staircase to get the bar.
The night that I was there, their happy hour special was a $3 Box Car Brown Ale. Currently, their happy hour runs from 4-6pm and features half off burgers and melts, and from 5-7pm they feature a $3 beer. I ordered one of their featured mixed drinks called a “Partridge” for $8 which was a vanilla peach Manhattan. It was fantastic – sweet but strong. This is the perfect drink to order after a rough day at work. Perch also had a fun selection of infused shots: blueberry candy vodka, black licorice vodka, and atomic red hot vodka. In addition, Perch Pub hosts a great selection of craft beers. It is a Gastropub, and this is Philly after all, right?
The food menu features a “build your own burger” section, and everything on the menu is homemade from scratch. We ordered the Perch nachos ($12) made with short ribs and ground pork, 3 different types of cheese, and everything else that you could possibly want on a nacho. Everything was fresh and tasted authentic. We also ordered the fries that came with spicy ketchup and garlic aioli ($5) and onion rings with ranch dressing ($5). They were both amazing. I’d go as far as to say that the fries were the best I ever tasted. The sauces each had their own great taste, but the fries could easily stand alone!
The music selection offered us songs such as “Another One Bites the Dust”, “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Blame it on the Boogie” and made me want to dance. I probably would have had I had another Partridge. Thankfully I didn't, or I never would have made it down that staircase.
