The Drinkstorm

The Drinkstorm

Let's say the weekend’s coming up and you have no plans yet. You know two things: you want to hang out with some good friends, and you want to have some delicious drinks. If this applies to you and you’re in the mood for doing a little “home cooking," we recommend rounding up a stable of your favorite folks and doing what we call a Drink Storm.

A Drink Storm is a gathering of people and ingredients, all after one thing: an amazing, brand new, never-before-tasted cocktail.

The fancy capitalization is necessary.

It’s best done at the dwelling of someone with a decent amount of space, especially if you’re planning on broadening your Evite list. We recommend four people or more in an environment that can house ice, water, glasses and counter space.

Before the event, take a gander at your supplies and see what you are willing to donate to the event. It could be a couple bottles of rum, all the mixers (be sure to have a variety), a fancier ingredient like homemade bitters or a pricey tequila, etc. You choose the first parameter, since you are hosting (or at least read this article and suggested it to your friends). Whatever you are providing should already be in your possession. We can tell you the best kind of Drink Storms occur when you send out a message listing the contents of your liquor cabinet the day of and just see what happens.

instruct your guests to each bring anywhere from one to infinity items that they think they might need to create a good cocktail. Make sure everyone knows that it's a shared pool. Once an item has been contributed, it's up for use in the Drink Storm.

Have paper and pens handy for guests making cocktails. Repeat the regulations, if you will, just so everyone is on the same page. Flip some coins, play rock, paper, scissors or fight to the death to see who goes first, and allow them to mix their first drink. Mix a large quantity so everyone can have a taste. Encourage folks to write down what they use on their own pieces of paper that way, if you have a real winner, you can recreate it later. Keep a list of tasting notes, and have each person offer a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Repeat for each willing contestant, until a winner is decided. Celebrate with a batch of the victor's drink for everyone to sip on and enjoy the rest of the evening.

Losers? They get to clean up.

Drink Philly will be doing their own Drink Storm soon: be on the lookout for our favorite adventure recipes from the evening! Happy Storming!
