Two Evil Empires Join Forces
Pennsylvania, as we are all well aware, is still stuck in the dark ages when it comes purchasing alcohol. A new contract with the PCLB, however, will allow drinkers to purchase alcohol via kiosk in 24 Wal-Mart locations across the state, which would increase the total number of kiosks in the state to 56. Of course, Pennsylvania is the only state that uses kiosks with built-in breathalyzers to sell alcohol. but hey, it’s a small step forward, right?
Wine kiosks were introduced to Philadelphia last fall when they debuted at the local chain Fresh Grocer. Even the kiosks, which have been described as “ an attempt to modernize post-Prohibition laws”, have seen their share of controversy due to the traditionalists that have a stranglehold over Pennsylvania. The Independent State Store Union questioned the machines’ ability to keep alcohol away from underage customers. If that wasn’t enough, only a short time after opening in December, the kiosks were shut down due to the minor inconvenience of not actually distributing the wine that had been paid for by customers. After six weeks of repairs, the kiosks were reopened in February and now Wal-Mart is looking to cash in.
The PLCB describes the kiosks as providing an “added level of convenience in today’s busy society." We appreciate the effort to build us wine-spewing robots to show off to the other states, PLCB, but we have to think buying alcohol would be even more convenient if you just didn’t exist.
