Pizza Beer!
A few weeks ago, we came across “beer” that’s being served to dogs. We decided to continue the trend of tracking down bizarre brews. Boy howdy, have we found it.
Mamma Mia! Is the world’s first pizza-based beer, which is an ale brewed with oregano, basil, tomato, and garlic. The homebrewers have been producing this beer since 2006, with a goal to create a beer “that would pair with a wide variety of foods.”
Knowing well that this was a bizarre endeavor, they consulted brewmasters and books in an attempt to find the proper base for a recipe. One inspiration was from a member of the Chicago Beer Society, Randy Mosher. His book, titled “Radical Brewing,” includes notes on brewing everything from mushrooms to hot rocks.
The final recipe involves tossing an entire margherita pizza into the mash tun during the brewing process – steeping the pizza in a cheesecloth-type bag, so it can be strained out later. The pizza is 100% vegetarian, contains no animal products, and has no additional oils added.
We love pizza, so much, that we’re going to try to track down a bottle and do a tasting. We’ll let you know how it goes!
