Pliny the Elder Tapping at Birra, July 30

While not quite as scarce as its seasonal cousin of the Younger variety, Russian River’s Pliny the Elder is a sought-after rarity in these parts. Though the Santa Rosa, CA brewery produces this 8% ABV ale year-round, they do so in limited quantity, mostly to ensure the gem of a brew is always enjoyed fresh. You’ll have a chance to swig some of the well-balanced double IPA on July 30, when a keg is tapped at East Passyunk’s Birra.
Proprietor Gordon Dinerman and bar manager Jessica Fox plan to open the barrel at 4 PM sharp, and will pour 10-oz goblets of the Elder for $6.50 until the keg is gone. If you’ve never tried the acclaimed beer (which rates a chart-topping 100 on Beer Advocate), we suggest you head to South Philly this Monday afternoon for some smooth sipping fun.
