Frankford Hall Movember Kick Off Shave the Date Party, November 1

Frankford Hall Movember Kick Off Shave the Date Party, November 1

You may think it’s November, but you may be wrong about that first letter. Step back one in the alphabet and you’ll be on target: Movember. This annual movement takes place across the country, and sees men start on November 1 with a clean-shaven face and grow a moustache for the entire 30 days of the month. It’s all part of a campaign to raise awareness (and funds) for men’s health issues, especially prostate and testicular cancer.

Frankford Hall is the place to be to kick off this celebration of facial hair. The Fishtown beer garden is hosting professional barbers from The Art of Shaving, who will offer free shaves to all who wish to participate between the hours of 6–8 PM. To make going under the knife even better (fear not, no Sweeney Todd stories here), all beer will be offered for happy hour prices, all night long.

That means you can score $5 half-liter and $10 whole-liter drafts from the list of German and German-style brew — hefting those huge mugs high for toasts will help restore any masculinity lost when you go clean-faced. Look for specials on food throughout the evening as well, and play ping-pong or a game of Jenga (we recommend a double-box, high-tower version) as you watch the pros work their razors.

Frankford Hall will also host a grand “Mo Bros” gala at the end of the month; stay tuned for details. If you don’t want to do the shave thing (or can’t, ahem, ladies), there will be other events popping up throughout Philadelphia where you can get into the movement.

One we know of now will be held Friday, November 23 (the day after Thanksgiving), at Fado Irish Pub in Center City. From 5–9 PM, escape the fam and head out for pour-your-own pints of Guinness, a mashed potato eating contest and plenty of cameras to snap a pic of your mo-in-progress (and faux mos for those who don’t/can’t grow them).
