PHS Pop Up Garden and Independence Beer Garden Both Set Opening Dates
On the heels of the Spruce Street Harbor Park’s big debut, which finds much of the city’s drinking population going absolutely bonkers for cool outdoor venues, here comes news of two more beer gardens popping up in the weeks ahead.
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) is bringing back its perennially-popular Pop Up Garden of its fourth season on Tuesday, July 8. This year’s location is 1438-46 South Street. The vibe of this year’s pop-up garden draws inspiration from longstanding South Street irie merchants at Jamaican Jerk Hut, which is directly next door. The adjoining lots have been transformed into a tropical Shangri-la with elements repurposed from the Flower Show, palm trees, cabanas, hammocks and lights. But the big draw will be the tropical cocktails, cold craft brews and Caribbean dishes served by the Jerk Hut.
The PHS Pop Up Garden will be open Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 10 PM; Friday from 11 AM to Midnight; Saturday from 2 PM to Midnight; and Sunday Noon to 10 PM. Food and drinks will be served Monday through Thursday from 5 PM - !0 PM; Friday 5 PM to Midnight; Saturday Noon to Midnight; and Sunday Noon to 10 PM.
Independence Beer Garden, which chef and restaurateur Michael Schulson (Sampan, Izakaya, Saint James) is bringing to life with David Fierabend's award-winning Groundswell Design Group at 100 Independence Mall, West (6th and Market Streets) outside the Dow Chemical Building, is set to open to the public on Wednesday, July 9.
The beer garden will feature Groundswell’s trademark backyard-chic ambience with Top Chef-testant Travis Masar serving up summery cookout fare and two bars with 20 taps each. Shipping containers on-site will offer an air-conditioned respite for the heat averse.
