Though
George Sandoval’s Chicago transplants Mercadito and Double A are still delayed (they were announced in November of 2013 and still have yet to open), we can give you some details on these new spots so you’re ready when they do. Sandoval’s double bill will land at 22nd and Chestnut, on the ground floor of a relatively new high-rise and will provide guests with two totally different experiences.
Mercadito, the larger of the two, is Sandoval’s upscale Mexican eatery, and will presumably be competing somewhat with
El Rey (which is just a few blocks away) with its menu of tacos, guac, and Mexican-inspired cocktails that go well beyond margaritas. Double A, however, will offer an entirely different atmosphere -- while Mercadito will reportedly seat 130, Double A will be a speakeasy-style bar built for just 40, and the secretive, underground space will be accessible through a peephole door in the alleyway behind the main restaurant. If Double A’s
Chicago menu is any indication, they’ll serve a small, selective batch of classic cocktails, all with their own unique twist.
Keep an eye on the Mercadito Hospitality Group’s
Twitter for more information, or just keep walking by 2116 Chestnut - you may just stumble by on opening day, since it can’t be too much longer.
