We’ve reported on
Bar Hygge a
few times already, but now we’ve got great news for Fairmount-dwelling brewpub fans: Bar Hygge is supposed to open today,
Wednesday, February 3, but if you decide to venture over there today, call before making the trip just in case.
We were able to take some exclusive photos of the space and speak to Julie Keener, one of the bar’s co-owners, and get some really exciting details about Bar Hygge’s mission and offerings.
Keener says Bar Hygge aims to become a true neighborhood bar — one with a homey feel, but one that Philly residents will also happily travel to.
Though they’ll offer six house beers and a number of others, Keener says that while their beer is excellent, they have even more things to get excited about: “Technically we are a brewpub, but we consider ourselves a restaurant that happens to make its own beer.”
The wine and cocktail programs will be just as strong as the beer offerings. Beyond the four draft wines, the bar will offer four to six wines by the glass from bottles, and will serve wine by the glass, the carafe, and the bottle. The wines will be a mix of Old and New World wines from smaller producers, yielding high-quality wines at affordable prices (glasses will range from $8 to $10).
The cocktail menu will focus on what Keener calls “their takes” on classic cocktails, as both brewer Tom Baker and several of the bartenders are mixology fans. The spirit selection will be carefully curated, high-quality, and will feature as many local liquors as possible.
Finally, the menu will offer traditional pub food classics with upscale twists, but will have one great sharing feature — customizable boards. Each table, whether you’re dining solo or with a large group, will be able to choose from seasonal meats, cheeses, and vegetables to create one-of-a-kind appetizers and share plates. The restaurant also has an in-house smoker, so when it comes to meats, check out the house-cured salmon.
Keener says, about Bar Hygge’s overall mission, that “we know we can’t be all things to all people, but we hope that what we present, we present well, by focusing on a smaller, quality selection.” Stop by Bar Hygge with friends tonight to check out the offerings, share a board, and find your new favorite neighborhood spot.
