Sam Adams Utopias 2011 Batch Released
Sam Adams’ 2011 batch of Utopias hit shelves this May in honor of American Craft Beer Week. This year it weights in at 27% alcohol by volume and is available in it’s classic kettle shaped vessel, retailing at $150 per limited edition bottle.
If you are unfamiliar with Utopias and are wondering to yourself what would ever posses someone to pay a bill and a half for a bottle of beer, there are a few things you should know:
Utopias isn’t a beer for the weekend warrior or for any person that doesn’t take their beer seriously. With its high alcohol content, it is recommended to be tasted in a similar way as a scotch or cognac - in small servings and a snifter glass to accentuate its aroma’s and flavor.
Its complex taste can be attributed to its equally involved brewing and aging process. Sherry, Port and Madeira casks impart notes of toffee, oak, honey and dark fruits. A variety of hopsas well as traditional ale and champagne yeasts add to its taste and caramel color.
Utopias first hit shelves in 2001 and, at the time, set the world record for the highest ABV commercially available beer. A record that has since been topped by Brew Dog’s “End of History” at 55%. At $150, though, this beer is best hid under lock and key.
