Three Local Breweries Announce the Release of Pope-Inspired Beers Ahead of Papal Visit

A few local breweries are preparing for Pope Francis’ September visit the best way they know how – by brewing papal-inspired beers, of course. Cape May, Philadelphia, and Manayunk Brewing Companies have announced plans to release holy brews that will be on tap at area bars and restaurants while his holiness is in town.

Cape May Brewing Company announced they will release YOPO (You Only Pope Once), a small batch papal Pale Ale brewed with “an unholy amount of hops”, while Philadelphia Brewing Company announced yesterday that they are brewing Holy Wooder, a Belgian-style Tripel “that guarantees to cleanse your soul and set you on the path to righteousness”. Both of these papal brews will only be available on tap.

Manayunk Brewing Company’s pope-inspired brew has been dubbed Papal Pleasure, and the water used to brew it was blessed by Father John Kelly of St. John the Baptist Church in Manayunk. Papal Pleasure is a Belgian Amber Ale infused with oak from Malbec wine barrels and Candi sugar from South America. Unlike the other two pope brews, Papal Pleasure will be available in 22-ounce bottles and on tap around the city.

Grey Lodge Pub will have all three of these beers on tap during Pope Francis’ visit, but stay tuned for more information about where else you can sip on these righteous brews.
