Historical Drinking: Classic Cocktails of The South & Where to Find Them in Philadelphia |
Ramos Gin Fizz
Another classic hailing from New Orleans, this is a cocktail that requires being shaken for 12 minutes. Yes you read that right. It's one of the most labor intensive cocktails to make, which is why it's been exciting to see it pop up on more menus lately. The results of the 12 minute shake is a luxurious drink with a smooth texture and decadent mouthfeel, that makes for a great brunch cocktail.
The Ramos in question in the drink's name is from Henry Ramos who pioneered this drink in 1888. He didn't personally shake these drinks to order, but instead he hired an army of young "shaker boys" to pass the shakers down the line between them. With a combo that includes gin, heavy cream, lemon, lime, orange blossom water, syrup and egg white its better to leave this one to the professionals. Might we suggest trying one at The Olde Bar. If you're feeling ambitious, give it a go with the recipe below.
2 oz Ford's Gin
1 oz simple syrup
1 oz heavy cream
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz lime juice
4 drops orange blossom water
1 egg white
Top with club soda
Combine ingredients and shake, shake, shake!
