Historical Drinking: Classic Cocktails of The South & Where to Find Them in Philadelphia |
The Seelbach
Born in 1917 in Louisville, Kentucky, this libation was named after the opulent Seelbach Hotel, which opened in 1905. The ingredients definitely speak to the glamour of the time and appealed to high rollers, like Al Capone and Lucky Luciano, who frequently played poker there. This long forgotten cocktail was rediscovered 20 years ago after being swept under the rug during prohibition. Try your hand at stirring up this sophisticated concoction courtesy of Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails by Dr Cocktail, or head to Southwark to give this a try.

1/2 oz Cointreau
7 dashes Angostura bitters
7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
5 oz Champagne
Stir the bourbon, Cointreau and bitters in a Champagne flute, then add the Champagne; stir again and garnish with an orange twist.
