Philadelphia's Newest Distillery, New Liberty Distillery, Rolls Out First Bottles

Local distillers are digging into area roots to create the city’s newest distillery. New Liberty Distillery in Kensington is channeling Philadelphia’s post-Prohibition history in their first line of bottles, Kinsey Rye and Kinsey 7-year.

Named after Philadelphia’s original Kinskey Whiskey Brand from the 50’s, the first of New Liberty’s bottles available to the public pays homage to one of the Continental Distilling Company of Pennsylvania’s popular brands but uses modern technique to craft a new product.

“The New Liberty Distillery is proud to be a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania distillery, so it was appropriate to make our first product offering a throwback to the history and tradition of Pennsylvania whiskey” Charles Ho, partner of New Liberty DIstillery, says in a recent press release issued by the distillery. “It was a long journey for us to research, then source and blend our interpretation of Kinsey Whiskey”

Starting at $29.99, the two varieties of whiskey available offer two totally different options of their Kinsey blend. The Kinsey Rye was blended and bottled by Master Distiller Robert J. Cassell. A post-Prohibition Pennsylvania style, the rye is aged in white oak cooperage to create a malty and bright bottle.

And then there’s the Kinsey 7-year, aged in a reused oak barrell. Made entirely from corn, this whiskey is medium-bodied like the rye blend, but has more vanilla and floral notes found from the aging process.

Bottles are available at the New Liberty Distillery on Cadwallader Street, the site of the distillery, tasting room and distilling school.
