Introducing Catoctin Creek Craft Spirits, Now Available in Philadelphia
In 2009, Becky and Scott Harris founded Catoctin Creek with the mission of creating organic, ultra high quality spirits using as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible. Things have gone well for the first post-Prohibition distillery in Virginia’s Loudoun County (well-known as a DC-area wine-producing region), and the company now produces a diverse roster of liquors.
Good news for Philadelphians: the lineup is now available in Pennsylvania, via online sales at the Fine Wine & Good Spirits website (here). Why should you care? The quality of Catoctin Creek booze speaks for itself — a great chance to taste it is to get tickets to the Philadelphia Whiskey Festival, where the company will have a table — but we’ll also describe the merits here to give you an idea.
Since its introduction, Roundstone Rye has garnered numerous awards for its spicy start and round sweet body. The liquor is made from 100% rye grain, then aged in new Minnesota white oak casks to bring out woody, caramelly, buttery notes. Plus, it’s made with all organic ingredients, making it one of the only organic whiskeys in America.
Roundstone Rye starts life as Mosby’s Spirit, a clear grain liquor that’s also totally organic (of course). The unaged white whiskey has also been hailed for its spicy nose and a fresh flavor. Also on the clear side is the organic Watershed Gin, which pays respect to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. A rye and wheat base becomes complex and intriguing when infused with botanicals, creating a finished spirit that’s full of crisp juniper and subtle citrus and cinnamon. All three of these spirits are not only organic, they're also kosher.
Catoctin Creek also produces several brandies, in more limited edition. Keep up with new releases and news from the distillers by following along on Twitter and Facebook, both sites are updated often with tantalizing recipes and other fun booze news.
