Masters Now Open at Temple University is a Study Hall with a Bar
Masters Bar & Restaurant's opening marks the first time in the history of education that students had reason to get psyched about taking summer classes. Temple University students, anyway.
The new bar and restaurant just opened on the south-west corner of Owl’s home turf at 1535 N. Carlisle Street, just a stone’s throw from The Pearl movie theater. Former G Lounge general manager Waylon Nelson and backers are behind the venture, and bring a whole new curriculum to campus life in North Philly with it.
The first of Masters' two floors rocks a soft-industrial look with a Temple shade of red on the walls, 20-seat bar and table seating. Upstairs, the Study has a more chill atmosphere where students can hit the books while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat during the day, and make the scene as the space takes on a more club-like vibe at night. There’s another 20-seat bar and more tables up there, too.
As far as the drinks go, there’s 32 taps that run the gamut from cheap domestics to local, craft and import beers, plus an extensive selection of bottles and cans. A tight cocktail list focuses mostly on the classics, but offers a couple of surprises, like the Temple Tea, essentially a Long Island Ice Tea turned cherry red. The bar also has a good selection of California wines available by the bottle and glass.
The decidedly student budget-friendly menu offers a solid bunch of grub priced between $5 and $18. On the low end there’s things like wings, Disco fries and burgers. And for the more flush, there’s fish and chips, pan-roasted chicken and steak frites.
