First Look: Northern Liberties Newcomer Bardot Readies For Its Closeup

Sixties sex-kitten-inspired Bardot is just about ready to make its debut. It picks up where tragically-named Wine-O — before that the Ministry of Information, which followed the W&J Bar — left off at 447 Poplar Street in Northern Liberties.

The new bar and restaurant serves as the second effort from Pub on Passyunk East owner Dennis Hewlett. He told us he expects to have it ready to open on, or shortly after, Thursday, August 21.

Nearly a full year went into overhauling the space. It has been transformed into a dimly-lit and drop-dead-sexy hideaway that’s dressed in dark woods and burgundy Victorian flocked velvet wallpaper. Overhead there’s pressed tin ceilings and a gorgeous octopus chandelier from South Philly artist Adam Wallacavage.

The 15-seat bar’s top was constructed with one continuous walnut timber with a live edge. It boasts 14 taps for beer and two for kegged wine. An 18-bottle wine list features mostly French selections representing various regions. A cocktail list, Hewlett told us, is currently in the works too. It will offer classics as well as some originals. Tables and booths will accommodate as many as 70 more guests.

Rhett Vellner, whose resume includes stints at Resurrection Ale House and Petruce et al., will serve a menu of sophisticated European comforts. Smaller bites include assorted tartines, artisan cheese boards and charcuterie. Larger plates will include Duck Cassoulet with Toulouse sausage, kale and tarragon mustard cream; Spaghettini Noir with squid ink, squid, chorizo and corn. For something in between, there will also be things like Saffron Dumpling Gratin with cauliflower, leeks and pine nuts; and Eggplant Panzanella with heirloom tomatoes, white beans and za'atar.

Hours will be 11 AM - 1:45 AM daily, with the kitchen serving food until 1 AM. Happy hours will run Monday through Friday from 4 PM - 6 PM. In the weeks ahead look for brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays.
