2nd Story Brewing Opening in Old City, Tues., Oct. 21
Old City’s suds scene will get a big boost on Tuesday, October 21, when long-awaited 2nd Story Brewing finally opens its taps and doors for the thirsty public. The new brewpub and restaurant, which will feature a local and seasonally driven menu, replaces Triumph Brewing Company’s shuttered outpost at 117 Chestnut Street.
Owner Debbie Grady, a working farmer who owns Tilted Barn Farm in Pottstown, PA, has assembled a team that includes brewer John Wible, a former IT professional and award-winning homebrewer, General Manager Ken Merriman, who owns District Riverton Bistro in Riverton, NJ, and Executive Chef Rebecca Krebs, former executive chef at Salt Air in Rehoboth Beach, DE, to bring her dream to life.
In a prepared statement, Grady explains the group’s shared philosophy, which helped inspire the new venture’s name:
“We believe that everyone has a ‘second story,’ or a passion to do something they love, and our brewery and restaurant celebrates that spirit.”
The two-story brewpub will feature two floors of seating, each with a bar area and five different dining spaces with enough room for more than 200 guests. The upstairs will have a fireplace and beer garden and a cozy, rustic vibe set by salvaged oak accents and nostalgic photos of Philadelphia’s rich brewing history.
The bar will feature four distinctive house beers, five rotating taps and one cask engine that will pour the ales and lagers Wible brews on the premises with custom-grown hops and other ingredients sourced from from Grady’s Tilted Barn Farm. Expect to see everything from a traditional English Mild, and American Pale Ale and a Saison to seasonal specialties like the Great Harvest Pumpkin Ale and Colonial Porter on tap at the opening. In addition to house beers, 2nd Story will also feature a full bar with a wide selection of cocktails and wines.
In the kitchen, Chef Krebs will turn out a selection of beer-friendly dishes that run the gamut from fig and arugula salads to chili to mussels and more sophisticated dishes wrought from local and seasonal ingredients.
