Philadelphia’s premier German beer hall, Brauhaus Schmitz, is bringing Starkbierfest to the city from Friday, March 24 through Sunday, March 26.
Starting on Friday, they will host five different sessions, with the first one beginning on March 24 at 5 PM. The other sessions are Saturday, March 25 (1 PM, 5 PM, & 8 PM) and Sunday, March 26 (1 PM).
This festival will feature plenty of rare and unique German beers you may not have had the chance to try before, but perhaps the most exciting beer available will be Kristallweizenbock (7.5% ABV, from Weihenstephaner Brewery), which has never been made available in the United States before. This take on a traditional Hefeweizen with notes of banana and citrus is made according to a nearly forgotten, century-old recipe, so German beer enthusiasts will certainly want to give this rarest of beers a try. They’ll also be tapping Samichlaus, which was once considered the strongest and rarest beer in the world and comes out at a whopping 14% ABV.
Starkbierfest aims to celebrate darker German beers to bridge gap from winter into spring, and among many other varieties and rarities, those two beers are sure to start excited drinkers off on the right foot. Historically, this particular celebration differs from its more famous counterpart, Oktoberfest, in that the beers are stronger and darker to help get people through Lenten fasts - they even referred to these intense brews as “liquid bread.”
For just $15 ($20 at the door), guests can enjoy a strong beer upon admission, a pretzel necklace, and a 10 oz. commemorative beer stein branded with a Brauhaus Schmitz goat. After that first strong beer, the session is pay as you go. During the Saturday 1 PM session, the festival will also feature live entertainment, including an accordion player and live goats. Guests are encouraged to dress in traditional German garb, including lederhosen and dirndls!
Tickets are available here.
Don’t miss out on this storied beerfest, especially not with so many rare beers on hand and so many sessions to attend — so be sure to make your way to Brauhaus Schmitz this weekend for the beer opportunity of a lifetime.
