On Saturday, May 6, the country’s fastest horses will hit the track in Louisville, Kentucky for the 143rd Kentucky Derby. Whether you’re a huge fan of the track or are just in it for the mint juleps, here are the best places to watch the big race in Philadelphia.
Visit this hotel bar for $7 Knob Creek mint juleps, margarita pizzas, and sparkling wines all day long. (1421 Arch St.)
This Fishtown spot will bill having a Texas-style derby party with Austin Eastciders’ new blood orange cider, other Eastcider flavors, and cider cocktails made with Tito’s vodka. They’ll also be holding a derby cowboy hat contest, a buy a cider-pick a horse competition and a decorate your own hat station. (1308 Frankford Ave.)
Watch the Derby at The Cambridge’s Kentucky Derby Party, which will feature bottles and drafts of Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout as well as special bourbon cocktails like the mint julep, Kentucky mule and bourbon sage smash. Enjoy food specials like derby pie, a walnut chocolate tart; grilled catfish with cheddar tasso grits; and pulled pork sandos with potato salad. (1508 South St.)
Alltech Brewing will be visiting the South Philly bar to serve their Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ales while guests watch the big race. The bar will also be serving mint julep freeze pops and holding a Derby hat contest for a chance to win some swag. (1148 S 11th St.)
Join Field House at 5 PM on Saturday for their Kentucky Derby watch party. Listen to live music from the Secret Service and High Five Swan Dive while enjoying $4 Yards drafts and $5 mint juleps. Don your best big hat and you could win $250. (1150 Filbert St.)
Grab a $6 mint julep all day long on Saturday at either of the MilkBoy spots in the city. (1100 Chestnut St; 401 South St.)
Gather at Pagano’s huge outdoor party from 3 PM - 7 PM on Saturday. They’ll be broadcasting the race on the jumbotron as well as hosting live music acts. There will be outdoor games, a best dressed contest, and a Derby drink list that includes mint juleps and more. Best of all the proceeds benefit For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation. General admission tickets are $40 and include three free drinks and a raffle ticket; VIP tickets are $60 and include three free drinks, one mint julep, and 3 raffle tickets. (2001 Market St.)
Catch “the greatest two minutes in sports” at this Old City bar with custom mint juleps crafted with seasonal berries, herbs and other ingredients for $10. (433 Chestnut St.)
Sip on $6 mint juleps all day on Saturday at this South Street southern-style staple. (1516 South St.)
Rittenhouse Square’s fine-dining spot Square 1682 will offer a Great Gatsby-inspired bourbon cocktail for Derby Day made with Bluebird bourbon, the Seelbach. (121 S 17th St.)
Visit this Headhouse Square southern spot starting at 2 PM for their annual Derby party. Sip on $5 Woodford Reserve mint juleps until 7 PM and all guests will be entered to win a commemorative Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby bottle. Admission is free. (509 S 2nd St.)
The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus is celebrating their 35th anniversary with a giant block party outside of Woody’s on 13th Street. The party will take place between 2-7 PM and will feature food trucks, music, dancing, performances, lots of games and other festivities. Admission is free. (200 S 13th St.)
