Philly's Best Happy Hours: ROOT restaurant + wine bar

Welcome to Philly’s Best Happy Hours, a feature highlighting great happy hours in different neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. Since Drink Philly started out as a place to find happy hours in the city, we thought it was only right to return to our roots and turn the spotlight on some of Philly’s absolute best happy hour deals.

In this installment, we’re taking a look at ROOT restaurant + wine bar, a chic, modern spot located right on Fishtown’s bustling thoroughfare, Frankford Avenue. Owned by Stephen Starr alum Greg Root, Root serves Spanish-inspired plates and tapas alongside an excellent selection of wines, cocktails, and beers at excellent price points.

Their happy hour is especially fantastic because it takes regular menu items down to a lower price point, which is sometimes rare to find on a happy hour menu. It takes place every Monday through Friday from 5 PM - 7 PM.

All snacks and toasts, which include everything from bagna cauda to pan con tomate, go for $5; sangria and selected wines are $6 per glass; for $7, you can pick one cheese and one salumi; and each one of their unique gin & tonics is $8. (For specifics on the snacks, cheese, and salumi, check out their full menu.) The latter comes in a number of varieties, including:

#1 (Bluecoat, Mediterranean tonic, rosemary, thyme, lemon, lime)
#2 (Bluecoat, Mediterranean tonic, sage, grapefruit)
#3 (Beefeater, Indian tonic, dill, toasted coriander, cucumber)
#4 (Beefeater, Indian tonic, star anise, star anise, orange peel)

“Our guests love our happy hour because of the quality, variety and price of our offerings,” says Greg Root. “We have large and small groups that come in to get plenty of snacks, cheese + salumi, wine, and gin & tonics!”

Next time you’re on Frankford Avenue on a hot summer day, be sure to stop into Root to grab a refreshing G&T like you’ve never had before alongside some fried chickpeas or cheese and salumi.
