Philly's Best Happy Hours: a.bar's Oysters, $8 Punch & Wines, and $4 Beers
Welcome to Philly’s Best Happy Hours, a feature highlighting great happy hours in different neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. Since Drink Philly started out as a place to find happy hours in the city, we thought it was only right to return to our roots and turn the spotlight on some of Philly’s absolute best happy hour deals.
This week, we're focusing on a.bar, the chic, casual counterpart to a.kitchen, which you can find right at the corner of 18th and Walnut. Both are located in aka Rittenhouse Square and are owned by Ellen Yin (the restauranteur behind Old City's Fork), and as one half of the duo, a.bar serves up small plates, classic cocktails, and is home to an extensive raw bar.
a.bar's cozy, modern space also offers a phenomenal happy hour, which is served throughout the bar on Mondays through Fridays from 4 PM - 6 PM.
If you're looking for drinks, don't miss out on their rotating house crafted punch ($8), which is made using carefully considered local and seasonal ingredients and changes frequently. You can also try white or red wine for $8 each, though the varietal will change, as they feature different wines from their cellar based on availability, or a rotating craft beer for just $4.
There's also plenty of food deals on their happy hour menu — since a.bar is known for its raw bar, be sure to try their select oysters by the half dozen for $9. All of the other food specials are just $6 apiece, which range from house-made potato chips and dip to pork & veal pate with grilled bread to lamb sausage with shishito peppers.
"Happy hour here is great because it brings in a lot of different folks," says Naaj Reffell, one of a.bar's bartenders. "People look for good deals, and you can get a good wine or cocktail here for a good price. We've also had some seriously special wines featured for happy hour, so look out for that."
Next time you're in Rittenhouse, stop into a.bar, grab some oysters and pate, and ask about the daily rotating punch for the perfect ending to a long day.
