Le Caveau, The New Wine Bar Atop The Good King Tavern, Now Open
The Good King Tavern has a new upstairs hangout; Le Caveau, the French bistro's new wine bar, will open on Thursday, October 24.
Philadelphia's newest bar á vins, carefully curated in traditional Parisian style by Good King owner Chloe Grigri, will take over the building's second floor space, which has long laid dormant.
Per a press statement regarding the new spot's name, they explain that Le Caveau is "inspired by the term’s loose and colloquial meaning, which is popular across France, in relation to 'le caveau des vins,' or 'wine cellar.' Though this 'wine cellar' is several feet above the ground, and not below, Chloe felt it alluded best to the stashes of wine she’ll store and pour."
Head upstairs — either through Good King itself or Le Caveau's specific entrance on South 7th Street — to discover a world of wine perfect for novices and experts alike.
The expansive, enormous wine list is, naturally, French focused (though they offer non-French varietals as well), and with over 130 bottles and a healthy assortment of wines by the glass, there's something here for every kind of wine drinker.
The wine list also places a focus on sustainably farmed and "natural" wines, and one featured producer even has a personal connection to The Good King Tavern. Cochonnet, which has a Melon de Bourgogne, Provence rosé, and Gamay on the by-the-glass menu, has partnered with Grigri before, and she even helped pick the name "cochonnet," which means "piglet" in French.
The food, which will all come from The Good King, is more limited than the tavern's offerings, but you'll still find plenty of things to snack on, from assorted olives to mixed nuts to charcuterie and cheese.
They also have one beer on tap and one draft cocktail, which is a classic Negroni for $10.
Whether you're drinking and dining at Good King or simply in the neighborhood, you won't want to miss out on this new Philadelphia experience, where you can visit France without buying an airline ticket.
Le Caveau is open Thursday through Sunday from 6 PM to 12 AM.
