All upper echelon Happy Hours, the kind that becomes a weekly staple in your office, have three things in common; beer specials, cocktail specials, and appetizer specials. Alfa has all three and more.
Self-described as “a casual hangout for the upscale Rittenhouse neighborhood,” Alfa American Tavern's selection and setting offer something for everyone.
I went there during a Friday Happy Hour and just beat the rest of the city who had similar plans. Select beers were $3, including Kenzinger (the local staple from Philadelphia Brewing Company), as well as Yuengling. Cocktails with sweet flavors and a variety of spirits are just $5. Expect $4 wine specials, and $5 champagne specials daily.
If you’re looking for something small but filling, chips & salsa, tater tots, and Cajun wings highlight the $3 appetizer menu.
I tried three of the cocktails. If you’re expecting those $5 cocktails that come in miniature cups comprised 90% of ice, you are in for a pleasant surprise. The portions are plentiful. On the menu, I enjoyed:
The Juicy Couture: A black cherry margarita with hand-squeezed lime and Plata tequila.
The Vargas: Russian standard vodka, angostura bitters, fresh lime, ginger beer, served in a copper mug.
The Mount St. Helens: cherry vodka, pomegranate, pineapple.
The Mount St. Helens was tasty, The Vargas was flat out cool (even in appearance alone). The Juicy Couture was the winner for me, as is usually the case when tequila & lime enter the competition.
Alfa has a spot and drink for just about everyone. With unique food and drink menus, low prices, and a casual atmosphere, Alfa distinguishes itself as a place for the ‘young professionals’ to go after work.
