Wine Reduces Risk of Sunburns
Happy news for wine drinkers!
A recent study from the University of Barcelona and the Spanish National Research Council has concluded that a compound found in grapes may protect skin cells from ultraviolet radiation.
When skin is exposed to UV rays, they activate chemically-reactive molecules in the body. When this happens, it triggers enzymes that damage skin cells. The compounds found in red wine are now thought to reduce the formation of these reactive molecules, thus helping to protect against sunburns.
Wine has always been lauded for its health benefits as a ward against prostate cancer, Alzheimer's, and most recently for promoting health in space.
While it's not the best idea to guzzle that bottle of wine and bake yourself in the sun for eight hours, it's nice to know that a glass or two could help protect our bodies during those intense heat waves!
