Now Open: Robert Wiedmaier's Mussel Bar at Revel Resort

One of the best finds at the new Revel Resort — one we’ve found ourselves hitting up multiple times even in these early preview stages of the casino’s opening — is Robert Wiedmaier’s Mussel Bar. You may have heard the intriguing tales about the original Mussel Bar in Washington, D.C., with offerings inspired by the chef’s love of all things Belgian; maybe you even wanted to make a pilgrimage. Now all it takes is a jaunt to Atlantic City.

To set the scene: a tight rock band plays onstage in a space graced with both polished and rough wood fixtures; an enormous, classic European clock keeps the time; and a chrome-studded motorcycle hangs over the bar. Over 150 Belgian brews — including Antigoon, the pale ale brewed specially for Wiedmaier in Belgium — grace the far wall, which looks like a craft beer lover’s fantasy library. There are also plans to have local South Jersey breweries represented at the taps.

Though that alone makes for a great drinks program, you can’t ignore the extensive wine list, complete with an expert sommelier. Innnovative bartenders run wonderfully mad cocktail experiments, for example, an as-yet-unnamed concoction of rum, pineapple, and fresh jalapeno.

The comfortable atmosphere, combined with the impressive array of craft brews and top-notch food, creates an notable experience. For eats, don’t miss the ethereal crab cakes, wood-fired “tarts” (pizzas) and  Belgian waffles made the right way, with a feathery light crisp texture. Best of all, Mussel Bar promises not to hold anyone “food hostage,” as many casino lounges do: whether you choose to drop $300 on a perfect porterhouse steak and Champagne or just $40 on fabulous mussels and beer, you will be well taken care of.
