Varga

Varga
The corner of 10th and Spuce just got awesome.Varga is the newest addition to the Washington Square West neighborhood, and it's setting out to be your favorite spot for beer. Offering twenty drafts that are updated daily, two beers on cask, and an impressive whiskey and scotch menu, the knowledgeable staff at Varga has proven that they are an up and coming force to be reckoned with.

The design is based on the Varga Pin-Up girls of the 1940's. Varga's girls smile down from the ceiling over the bar, and simple but elegant black and white walls neatly hold it together.

The average draft price runs $6. In fact, almost no draft runs higher than $6. Varga's shining point rests in the fact that its price range is far more accessible than many of the other bars in the area. Granted, 22 beers on tap may not impress lovers of certain Belgian beer bars around Philadelphia, but with beers changing so frequently, it's unlikely that even the most adventurous of imbibers will get bored.

A few specialty cocktails are on the menu, as well as a full you-call-it bar. A selection of ten to fifteen wines was also listed, but the beer is what Varga really focuses on. Varga also offers take-home growlers for $25. After the initial investment, you can refill it for $20-$25 (price varies by beer) at any time. For the price of filling it, you can easily make your investment back in no time.

The staff was friendly, informative, and knowledgeable. The two beers recommended both met all the specifications I was looking for, and the tasting descriptions were spot-on. I had the pleasure of talking to the bar manager who excitedly told me of their upcoming drafts, as well as the Flying Fish Exit 11 release party they are hosting on Wednesday July 12th.

Provided they haven't swapped it out, be sure to try Founders Backwoods Bastard. This beer is for the bourbon lover, but is approachable by all. Rich flavors of vanilla, toffee and cream radiate through the heavy toasty goodness. At 10.2% ABV, this beer isn't for the faint of heart.

The North Coast Brewing Company's Old Rasputin Imperial Stout was also excellent, rich with coffee and chocolate notes. A slight bitterness can be found in the finish, but the full flavors in each sip make you forget all about it.

Coming soon to the tap are the Mad Elf Ale, as well as an offering from Elysian Brewing Company.

Happy hour runs Monday to Friday from 4-6pm, and features select $2 cans, $4 drafts, and $5 specialty drinks.
