Franklin Mortgage Celebrates Third Anniversary With Throwback Menu
If you happen to need a brief respite from suds this week, there’s no better place to turn than The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. The Rittenhouse speakeasy has become renowned nationwide for creative cocktails, and June 4, 2012 marks the third anniversary for the underground hotspot. In celebration of three solid years of drink slinging, The Franklin has crafted a menu using recipes from the very first two bills of fare they ever offered.
“I'm incredibly proud of the fact that we’ve honored our opening menus by making each one better than the one before,” says general manager Colin Shearn, adding, “If you aren't busy being born, you're busy dying.” That said, he and head bartender Al Sotack — the mind behind the majority of the bar’s creations — have pulled a selection of early gems to feature on the current menu, which will be offered from throughout the month of June.
Choice revivals include the classic Corpse Reviver No. 2 (Beefeater, Cointreau, Cocchi Americano, Pernod and fresh lemon); the summery Center City Swizzle, a crushed-ice-filled glass that holds Old Hoverholt Rye, Lustau Amotillado sherry, Velvet Falernum, lemon juice and ginger syrup; and the forward-flavored Pirate Slave (Rhum JM, Punt e Mes, Campari, Cane and house orange bitters; $15).
There are plenty of others to choose from in the six-page menu book, presented in The Franklin’s signature categories, which carry titles like “The Flowing Bowl — because sometimes the answer is punch in your mouth” and “Rebellious Spirits —because America was founded on them and progress depends on them.” Check out the full menu here (PDF). If you’re wishing for a bit of booze instead of beer this week, you know where to go.
