Bottle Bar East Opens in Fishtown With 850 Varieties of Beer

The U.S. is breaking beer records, according to recently released data from industry research group the Beer Institute. Thanks to a recent surge, there are currently 2,751 operating breweries in the United States, a number higher than any other time in history.
Though already quite robust, Philly’s beer scene is also still growing. One of the newest brew meccas to open is Bottle Bar East, a craft bottle shop and bar that opened its doors this autumn in Fishtown. Alongside recent arrivals Pizza Brain, a pizza museum and parlor, and BBQ and whiskey stop Fette Sau, Stephen Starr’s latest venture, the Bottle Bar East brings the neighborhood new food and drink options. The shop offers 850 varieties of beer and a friendly, well-educated staff to go with them.
The bottle selection that sits at the front of the store leads into Bottle Bar East’s back bar, equipped with eight taps and a massive projection screen TV. With a few tables scattered around, it’s a small, casual area focused on the copper-topped bar. You can choose from the bar’s liquor or draft options, or pick from the wide selection of retail bottles and cans.

Just like brews, the food menu spans the world, offering meats and cheeses from a variety of domestic and international locations. There are hearty options, like the Grilled Philly Cuban, a sandwich layered with two types of prosciutto, Pecorino Crotonese, roasted pepper and pickle, or the Fishtown Rarebit, a soup made from extra sharp cheddar melted into a Yards Love Stout. Lighter pickled options including spicy green beans, beets and pepperdew are also on the menu.
Upstairs, Bottle Bar East has an additional seating area with foosball and darts, with local art that lines the wall. First Friday events with monthly featured local exhibits are planned for the future. Every Thursday the bar hosts live music, played on a stage that sits under exposed piping above the front corner of the bar. Just a few steps away lay the cases holding customers’ next beer, which staff will gladly help select if the options seem too wide. A current favorite is Kwak, a Belgian amber ale with yeasty hints of caramel and spice.
Swing by and enjoy the live music or latest sports game on TV, or grab a mix-a-six to go. Bottle Bar East is open noon–2 AM, seven days a week.
