Cook and Shaker Opens in Kensington Thursday, November 7

Craft beer, clever cocktails and scratched-cooked comforts in Kensington
Cook and Shaker Opens in Kensington Thursday, November 7

It was only a matter of time before Philadelphia’s hipsterati pushed past its Fishtown fortifications and began bringing gentrification into the Kensington section of the city. Just as places like 700 Club and Standard Tap brought an air of cool to Northern Liberties in the nineties, and joints like Johnny Brenda’s, Kraftwork and Loco Pez did the same for Fishtown in more recent years, Cook and Shaker, a new bar and restaurant opening this Thursday, November 7, blows winds of change down the blocks of Kennsington.

The 55-seat spot, which is the brainchild of hospitality vet Laura Viegas, is outfitted in exposed brick and reclaimed wood, and will specialize in craft beers, clever cocktails and scratch-cooked comforts with ample veggie and vegan options. The kitchen will serve a full menu weekdays from 3 p.m to midnight, and noon until midnight on weekends.

As far as drinks go, Cook and Shaker’s bar will sport eight taps featuring mostly local craft beers, and at least one cider. Beyond cool brews, the new watering hole will offer a wide range of seasonally-focused cocktails and mocktails made to order with fresh, squeezed-in-house juices. As temperatures continue to dip in the weeks ahead, Viegas plans to roll out a selection of warmed beverages like Hot Cranberry Cider served with whiskey, amaretto or rum. There’s also going to be a variety of affordable wines available by the glass. All drinks will range in price from $8 to $10.
