10 Philly Bars with Fireplaces

Drink by the fire
10 Philly Bars with Fireplaces

The cold weather is here, but instead of lamenting about the chore of scraping ice off your windshield or waiting through SEPTA delays, remember this means it’s time to take part in a time-honored city tradition: getting drunk near open flames. Here are 10 city spots at which you could offer Santa a sip after he makes his classic entrance.

The Black Sheep Pub: This colonial townhouse turned Irish pub on Rittenhouse Square has a solid draft and bottle list to partake of amidst the antiqued-out decor and open hearth. (247 S. 17th St.; 215-545-9473).

The Dandelion: One word: cozy. Stephen Starr’s British pub in Center City offers multiple fireplaces by which to enjoy cask-conditioned ales, British fare, or tea and biscuits. The Queen would approve (124 18th St.; 215-558-2500).

Dark Horse Pub: A fireplace and specials during Flyers and Eagles games means this Headhouse Square tavern has its low-temp priorities straight (421 S. 2nd St.; 215-928-9307).

Devil’s Den: South Philly’s warmest beer bar touts a vast selection of ales, Belgians, wheats and lagers. It also hosts frequent beer-centric events that highlight specific microbrews like their annual “Light Our Fire” party at which they break out the logs and offer smoky beers on special (1148-1150 S. 11th St.; 215-339-0855).

Fado Irish Pub: Just off Broad, this branch of the nationwide chain offers Guiness, Jameson, bagpipes and all the appropriate Irish fixings, including a welcoming bed of coals (1500 Locust St.; 215-893-9700).

McGillin’s Olde Ale House: The oldest tavern in Philadelphia is a perfect place to drink beer, warm up by the fire and enjoy the festive decorations. Nothing says it’s the holidays like booze, fire and garland (1310 Drury St; 215-735-5562).

Nineteen: This swanky restaurant, bar and cafe sits atop the 19th floor of the Hyatt at the Bellevue. Fireplace seating and views of the city skyline? Please and thank you (200 S. Broad St.; 215-790-1919).

The Plough & the Stars: One of Old City’s most popular destinations, the Plough & the Stars is an ideal winter watering hole. Whether you head there early for an intimate dinner or cruise through later to pound a few back with the masses, the Plough & the Stars’ fireplace, high ceilings, wooden fixtures, and – yes – booze will keep you warm this winter (123 Chestnut St.; 215-733-0300).

Race Street Cafe: This neighborhood cafe is currently celebrating 10 years in business. Check the chalk board for their rotating specials, including 15 beers on tap (208 Race St.; 215-627-6181).

Standard Tap: This beer bar is your go-to in Northern Liberties for a great draft list and hearty eats. Combine that with the fireplace and an affinity for supporting local breweries and farmers and it’s a win all around (901 N 2nd St.; 215-238-0630).
