Adam Kanter & Katie Loeb Collaborating on Pop-Up Tiki Bar, Aug 16
If you’re serious about something, you say it with a Molotov cocktail. That’s what you’ll see in the video above, as proprietor and cane spirit maestro Adam Kanter describes the forthcoming 24-hour closure of Rum Bar. On August 16, the Rittenhouse drinkery will be reborn for 24 hours as Duke’s Surf Bar, “Philadelphia’s first true tiki bar in over 35 years.”
Kanter will accomplish tiki authenticity (is that like saying “real Barbie doll”?) with the aid of bartender and drinks author Katie Loeb, who has recently tweaked her repertoire of island-style cocktails for the beverage program at Han Chiang’s new West Philly outpost of Han Dynasty.
On Thursday, August 16, Loeb and Kanter will serve a strict list of 20 tiki drinks — no ordering off the menu, “unless it’s a shot or something.” Each cocktail will run exactly $10, no more, no less (in a happy development, this pricing seems to be working its way around the city since implemented by Lee at Chinatown’s Hop Sing Laundromat).
From what we know of the stable of over 200 rums and house-infused spirits in stock at Rum Bar, and the mixology prowess of Loeb (whose book Shake, Stir, Pour you can read about here and pick up here), this is a night that should not be missed. Check out the video above, hang loose, and see you at Duke’s.
