Rhino Bar Opens on 13th Street

Rhino Bar Opens on 13th Street

Chef Mike Stollenwerk’s Fish has moved again, from it’s year-old location at 13th and Locust to a space just adjacent — still in the Independent Hotel, but slightly smaller and better-suited to fine dining (it now has a chef's counter and an open kitchen). Instead, the spacious and windowed corner location is now open as Rhino Bar, a gastropub with a raw bar, assorted snacks and plates and draft beer and cocktails. The new tavern will serve food through 1 AM and drinks until 2 AM.

An eight-tap system has been installed (Fish did not offer draft brew), and will be stocked with craft beer and microbrews with a selection that changes often and is marked on a blackboard above the bar. Starting beers include Boulder Cold Hop Nitro, Halfacre Daisycutter Pale Ale, Clown Shoes Clementine and Neshaminy Creek Trauger Pilsner, and prices range from $6–$8. A good wine selection and specialty cocktail will fill out the beverage offerings.

To eat, the raw bar that gained many fans at Fish will stay, serving oysters and colossal crab cocktail, but will be complemented by a menu that includes other easy-eating dishes. Look for cripsy fried chicken skins, foie gras pierogies, meatloaf, lobster grilled cheese, cauliflower tempura, fried Brussels sprouts and other high-end comfort food.

Rhino Bar is soft open as of now, and expects an official opening on Monday, November 5. Regular hours will be 4 PM–2 AM, Monday–Thursday and 11 AM–2 AM, Friday–Sunday. So if you’re in Midtown Village and looking for a bite or sip before dinner, on a weekend morning, or on your way home, know there’s a new place to try.

1234 Locust St.; 215-557-4442
