Where to Toast to Liberty on Independence Day in Philadelphia
It’s just about that time to raise a glass to our country’s independence, and what better place to do it than a city that's been dubbed the Cradle of Liberty? Fortunately, there are plenty of Philadelphia bars, and some other unexpected spots, perfectly suited for toasting the 4th.
Independence Day Parade: Marching bands, floats, vintage cars, and at least one Ben Franklin; the 4th of July is almost here! Starting at 11 am on 6th and Chestnut, the Independence Day Parade will be hitting the streets of Philadelphia in the most patriotic of ways. Do likewise by checking out some of the nearby cocktail joints or any of the red white and blue themed events around town.
The Powel House 4th of July Celebration: The historic Powel House will open their doors for an open house and guided tours of the first mayor of a newly free Philadelphia. After you drink in some history, they will be providing cocktails, music and some delicious barbeque (244 S. 3rd St. 215-627-0364)
Pork of July: Standard Tap will continue their annual display of patriotism with specials on American Pale Ales which come with two free grilled pork hot dogs. For the entire weekend, they will have true American pairings: meat and beer. (901 N 2nd St.; 215-238-0630)
Philly 4th of July Jam: VH1 and Philadelphia’s own The Roots will be hosting the largest free concert in America this Independence Day on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Musical guests include Ed Sheeran, Aloe Blacc, Nicki Minaj and many more artists spread over four stages, and the grand finale fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art will absolutely blow you away. (Benjamin Franklin Parkway from 20th St. to Eakins Oval; 7 pm – 11 pm)
Adventure Aquarium Waterfront Fireworks Celebration: On Saturday 7/5, The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will return to the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing for a patriotic celebration of our independence from England. The band will deliver rousing numbers before the huge fireworks display begins. (121 N. Columbus Blvd., 215-629-3200)
Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza Cruise: This 3 hour cruise on Saturday 7/5 will give you the best seats to watch the fireworks in the whole city. The Ben Franklin Yacht is going to have a whole BBQ buffet of homestyle dishes, and this 21+ event will have DJs making sure that there’s plenty of dancing. The ship starts boarding at 7 pm and tickets are only $65. (401 N. Columbus Blvd.)
